"Art in a Box" 3-dimensional art of Marcee Blackerby.
Marchee Blackerby ImageMarcee Blackerby says that she is an accidental artist. Married to artist Ric Blackerby, Marcee has always focused her creative efforts on writing and left the visual arts to her husband. In her latest exhibit, Art in the Box, Blackerby demonstrates the changes that have taken place in her life over the past five years or so. Self-admittedly, she has turned into a pack rat, although in the nicest sort of way, collecting intriguing objects and artifacts from sources such as garage sales, thrift stores and E Bay. Inspired by the works of such artists as Red Grooms, her days are spent using pieces from these collections to create witty storybook boxes and other three dimensional art.

The artist, a small woman, who has used a wheelchair since the age of six, also works in much larger scale. She says, "My larger pieces often invite the viewer to play with the forms and colors, seeing first the color, then noting form. I often use men¹s ties as a painter uses paint creating chiascurro effects, texture and perspective. These works are the ideal segway into the smaller and more intricate container pieces. The contrast between the large and small lures the eye, asking viewers to flirt with the images in the big works and look closer at the innovative messages contained in the small works."

Marcee Blackerby earned a B.A. in English from the University of Utah. She started showing her mixed media art in 2001. In 2002, Blackerby was part of the Art Access Partners Program. Since then, she has shown in many venues, including: the Bountiful/Davis Statewide Exhibition, the Utah Arts Council Annual Crafts and Photography Exhibition and the Springville Art Museum Spiritual Art of Utah Exhibition. In 2004, Blackerby was designated one of twelve signature Art Fellows for the International VSA arts Festival in Washington, D.C. As such, she showed her art at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. and the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.
