Salt Lake Artist Offers Paintings and Drawings of the Natural World
Art Access II is pleased to present the work of artist and naturalist Carel P. Brest van Kempen. Brest van Kempen¹s exhibit will open on Friday, November 21 and hang through December 19.
Brest van Kempen grew up in Emigration Canyon, east of Salt Lake City, an ideal place to indulge his youthful fascination for the wild and its varied inhabitants. As a boy, he took up falconry and later studied biology. It wasn¹t until his 30th birthday that he decided to pursue a career in art.
Although Brest van Kempen had studied perspective in a high school drawing class and had gotten pointers from other artists, he is otherwise self-taught.
The things that make a particular species unique, such as behavioral traits, movements or appearance, are what first attracts the artist to it. Beginning with small compositional sketches, he goes on to complete a finished drawing. After referring to his slides to verify markings and anatomical details, he traces his drawing onto a board and then does an under-painting. Once he begins the actual painting, it takes him approximately one and a half hours to complete an area the size of one-square inch, most often using acrylics.
Brest van Kempen¹s paintings have received widespread acclaim, earning a number of prestigious awards in the United States, including the 1995 "Best of Show" Southeastern Wildlfe Art Expo, an Arts for the Parks Wildlife Award in 1992 and Awards in Excellence in 1994, 1996, 1997. 2004 and 2006 from the Society of Animal Artists.
The artist says, "As human impact on the natural world increases, our routine awareness of that world and our active participation in its processes diminish. But whether it¹s visible to us or not, our lives are irrevocably dovetailed into the vibrating matrix of nature. It¹s my hope that the little stories told in my paintings might awaken in the viewer a heightened sensitivity to the tiny ripples broadcast throughout that natural matrix by every one of its components."
Art Access II is located at 230 South 500 West #125 in Salt Lake City. Regular gallery hours are M F, 10 to 6. In addition, there will be Saturday hours of 11 to 3, between November 21 December 19.
