Powerful Women of Color Fill Art Access With Energy, Confrontation & Sensuality

Art Access Gallery is pleased to host V. Kim Martinez's "Mujures de Colores." The exhibition will hang from September 19 through October 10. The artist¹s reception will be held on Friday, September 19 from 6 to 9 PM during the monthly Salt Lake Gallery Stroll.

Martinez¹s colorful oil paintings on aluminum will fill the gallery with an abundance of energy representing both female power and fragility. Martinez says, "I create characters that are part real, part imagined; they are reconstructed from my memories of specific women. I draw imagery from sources such as super heroes, fashion and identity."

Through her art, the artist manipulates figures to suggest political, social and personal narratives. The psychology of the figures and physicality of painted aluminum references traditional ex-voto paintings.

Kim Martinez, who has been an associate professor of art at the University of Utah since 2001, presented a one person show in 1997 at Art Access Gallery titled "Rio Grande: Existing on the Fringe." She has studied with Judith Baca, an internationally known muralist from Los Angeles and traveled to Mexico City, to explore this distinctly Mexican art form. Martinez has subsequently directed and taught many mural projects through the city. The artist was a recipient of the 2003 SLC Visual Artist Mayors Award.

"Mujures de Colores" has previously been shown, to much acclaim, at the SPARC Gallery in Venice, California. Martinez reminds viewers that these large ( 4¹x4¹) paintings are her attempts to reconstruct personas from her fragmented memory, and to determine the affects that Mujeries experiences and insights have had on society.

Trinnaman Sisters Show Art Together For First Time

Art Access II is pleased to host the work of sisters Aubrey and Jamaica Trinnaman in the Access II Gallery from September 19 through October 10. The Artists¹ Reception is Friday, September 19 from 6 to 9 PM.

Jamaica, whose paintings are oil on canvas, says that her work simply charts the experiences and emotions she has as a woman and working mother. She says, "It follows the flow of my life, which doesn¹t always flow." Jamaica earned a Bachelor of Science in Art in 1997.

Aubrey, who is a photographer and will show Polaroid/C-Prints, is a freelance photographer. She earned a BFA in photography from Utah State University in 2006. Her work is very personal and it wasn¹t until recently that she felt a strong desire to show and share with new eyes and perspectives. The images in this show are about empathy and discovering innate femininity in form and gestures.
