Art Access Gallery
15th Annual Partners Exhibit |
|
Art Access Gallery is pleased to present its 15th Annual Partners Exhibit featuring six emerging adult artists with their professional seven artist mentors. The exhibit, showing the work of all eleven artists, will open on Friday, August 21 with an artists’ reception from 6 to 9 PM, during Salt Lake City’s monthly Gallery Stroll. The show will hang from August 21 through September 11.
Participating this year are emerging artists: Heidi Evans, Abbas Mathlum, Ali Spittler, Fariba Navid, and Andrew & Chaulle Italasamo. Their mentors, respectively, are: Andrea Stavrakakis, Brad Slaugh, Erica Houston, Connie Borup and S. Matthew Jones. Each partnership developed individual goals, which were then worked on, usually in the professional artists’ studios.
The Partners Program was established in 1994, when Art Access realized that many talented adult artists with disabilities or artists who represented other underserved communities, were falling between the cracks of its offerings. A wide variety of programs had been developed, but none addressed the specific needs of adult artists who needed assistance in developing technique, learning the intricacies of professionalism or in making connections to the arts community.
Since then, Partners has served over 200 emerging artists. Lives have been continually and positively transformed since the genesis of this program. Emerging artists have been juried into prestigious shows, sold their art, conducted art workshops and become mentors themselves.
This year, the Partners Program includes a husband and wife team with disabilities who are learning the complexities of origami from award winning origami artists S. Matthew Jones, as well as one artist each from Iran and Iraq, who are working respectively with Connie Borup and Brad Slaugh.
Over the years, mentors have included talented and community minded professional Utah artists such as Lenka Konopasek, V. Kim Martinez, Bonnie Sucec, Lee Deffebach, William Littig, Holly (Olivia) Mae Pendergast, Sandra Brunvand, Stefanie Dykes, Sam Wilson, Ben Behunin, Bonnie Posselli and John Erickson, as well as many others.

Art Access II Gallery
Talented Teens Star in Art Access Workshop Program Exhibition |
|
Art Access II Gallery is pleased to host the 12th annual Teen Workshop Exhibition, featuring the work of 50 teens with and without disabilities, who participated in this year’s workshop program.
The exhibit will hang from August 21 through September 11, with an Artists’ Reception on Friday, August 21 from 6 to 9 PM during the Salt Lake City’s monthly Gallery Stroll.
The free Art Access Teen Workshops are open to teens, from 13 to 19 years of age, who have a strong interest in the visual arts. Limited to 13 teens each, the 12-hour workshops are held at Art Access and taught by artists whose work is currently or has been exhibited in the gallery. Small workshops allow for more individual attention from the artists, as well as for teens from diverse backgrounds, to get to know each other and come to appreciate and understand each other’s differences.
Professional artists, who taught this year, are: Blake & Cat Palmer (Painted Photography), Cassandra Christensen Barney (Wishes, Dreams & Gratitude), Trent Alvey (The Power of Art to Create Social Change), Erica Houston & Blue Critchfield (Box Yourself), and Emmanuel Makonga (Cartooning with a Purpose). Work from all five workshops will be displayed in the exhibition.
Jean LaSarre Gardner is Workshop Coordinator. |
