Artifacts of Affluence: Landfill Fragments
Sculptor Raids Landfill for Artifacts of Affluence

Art Access Gallery is pleased to present the works of Utah State University Assistant Professor of Sculpture, Eileen Doktorski. Her exhibit, Artifacts of Affluence: Landfill Fragments, will hang from February 20 through March 13, with the Artist's Reception taking place on Friday, February 20 from 6 to 9 pm. Open to the public, the reception is held in conjunction with the February Gallery Stroll.

The sculptor says, "Concern regarding rising worldwide consumerism prompted me to visit one of the most evident hallmarks of our current throw-away culture, the city landfill. Although I found the pace of resident dumping disturbing, I was captivated by the rich juxtapositions of textures covering nearly every square-foot of the surface I walked on. My eyes scanned the ground sighting not only partially decomposed organic material, broken toys, carpeting and crushed plastic bottles, but brand new items still in their packaging strewn in amongst the mud and rubble."

She further explains that a few sculpture students from USU joined her, garbed in heavy boots, gloves and orange vests. They hiked over the landfill mound, marking areas of particular interest with spray paint and making molds using plaster and rubber. The schedule of the encroaching landfill bulldozers gave a great sense of urgency to their work.

Doktorski's intent in displaying these castings is to bring the subject of waste into the light for closer inspection. Transforming these casts into hardened materials of plaster and bronze signifies the permanence of waste. "Iridescent and reflective finishes of paint and gilding attract attention to further illuminate these fragments which should not be forgotten. The refuse depicted in these cast impressions belongs to us all."

Eileen Doktorski received her MFA from the Yale University School of Art and her BFA in Sculpture from the Parson¹s School of Design.

Troy Hunter:
Essential Tremors: Night Photography

Artist With Essential Tremors Makes Use of Hereditary Condition.

Art Access II Gallery is pleased to feature Salt Lake photographer Troy Hunter in his exhibit of digital photographs titled Essential Tremors: Night Photography. This exhibition will hang from February 20 through March 13.

The artist¹s reception will be held on Friday, February 20 from 6 to 9 pm
during the February Gallery Stoll.

Hunter, who is self taught , has a hereditary nervous condition called Essential Tremors that causes his hands to shake uncontrollably. He uses this condition to his advantage, however, when taking photographs of light sources at night, such as, fireworks, streetlights and car lights.

The shaking of Hunter's hands causes the lights to "move" in his photographs, thus causing fluorescent abstract designs, causing viewers to wonder about the original light sources.

A landscape architect by training, Hunter spends his professional time designing and constructing gardens and water features. Not surprisingly, he taps into these artistic skills when composing his photographs, experimenting with light sources, colors, quantities and shapes. The results are inventive and unique.
