Polynesian Artists Create Art That Reflects Life Experiences

Art Access Gallery is pleased to host Niu World: Being Polynesian in America, featuring the mixed media work of W. Kaaumoana Varner (Will), Richard Kolopeaua and Lilo Tauvao. This exhibit will hang from February 16 through March 9, with the Artists¹ Reception being held on Friday, February 16, from 6 to 9 PM during the Salt Lake Gallery Association¹s monthly Gallery Stroll.
Varner, Kolopeaua and Tauvao are members of a group of Polynesian American artists who form the art collective called Niu World. The collective¹s purpose is to create art that honestly reflects their individual and shared life experiences and to neutralize misleading stereotypes about Pacific Islanders. Varner says, ³ Niu World creates art that goes beyond what is expected and explodes the box on what a Polynesian is or is not supposed to be.²
To further this purpose the artists are creating a multi-media exhibit, which includes painting, sculpture, costume design and live performance. According to Kolopeaua, ³ Each artist will bring his own substantial talent, passion and sense of humor, as to what it means to be a Polynesian.²
Regarding the title, Niu World, the artists explain that a niu is a coconut, a notorious wanderer. It drifts from one island to the next, making its home wherever it lands. Likewise, Polynesian people have ridden the waves of necessity and ambition all over the world. For instance, Polynesians have had a presence in Utah for over 100 years. The art is this exhibit is meant to represent the experiences, frustrations and hopes of Polynesian Americans, who, whether born here or brought here at an early age, are taking root and thriving.

Art Access II Gallery is pleased to show the black and white infrared photography of Fred Hayes. This exhibition will hang from February 16 through March 9. The Artist¹s Reception will take place on Friday, February 16 during the Salt Lake Gallery Association¹s monthly Gallery Stroll.
Fred Hayes is a professional photographer whose photo credits include the following newspapers: the New York Times, USA Today, Washington Post, London Daily Mail and the San Francisco Chronicle. His magazine credits include: Newsweek, Time Magazine, Rolling Stone, People, Seventeen and Premiere. He has also been a still photographer for over 30 motion pictures.
In his leisure time, Hayes also engages in photography, but of a very different sort. Every opportunity he gets, Hayes travels to exotic destinations and takes black and white photographs with an infrared filter. This filter removes all visible and ultraviolet light leaving the infrared part of the light spectrum. The resulting photographs take on a very crisp and unworldly feel.
Hayes has never shown these works before, let alone had his photographs in a gallery. Some of the scenes from his travels, included in this exhibit, are from the following countries: Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Spain and the Western United States.
The photographer earned a degree in marketing in 1986 from Pennsylvania State University. He is an adjunct professor in the Communications Department of the University of Utah.
