VSA Utah has contracted with the Utah State Office Of Education: Special Education Services Unit since 1993 to provide inclusive arts services in all art mediums for students, ages 3 to 22, who receive special education services. Educators collaborate with professional artists to develop residency programs as requested by individual schools, teachers, or administrators from school districts and disability or cultural service organizations statewide. All residencies include an in-service component for educators in order to help them continue applying arts programming in their classrooms independently.
With the disappearance of arts specialists in Utah schools, students, especially those with disabilities, rarely have access to quality arts education and experiences. VSA Utah obtains the services of trained professional artists to create meaningful and inclusive arts education activities. Benefits for students include: opportunities to experience further classroom success; to become more fully integrated with student peers; and chances to be more fully integrated into typical student life. This programs requirement of integration prescribes that students receiving special education services are integrated with students from their school's mainstream population.
Integrated Arts Program Proposal Information
Art Access/VSA Utah accepts proposals for arts programming (Artist-in-Residencies, Arts Festivals and Special Arts Projects) for students receiving special education services, ages 3 to 22.
The Art Access/VSA Utah Artist Resource Directory includes well trained and qualified artists who are able to work in various circumstances and with a wide range of age groups and abilities.
Types of Programming
Artist in Residency A school or facility collaborates with a professional artist who conducts activities for a particular class or client group. All residencies are required to incorporate an inclusive element. The school or facility is also required to host an in-service for educators and/or staff to allow the artist-in-residence an opportunity to share the tools needed to include arts activities within established classroom curriculums.
Special Projects A school or facility collaborates with a professional artist(s) to plan an inclusive, larger-scale art project with a class, grade, or with multiple age groups. Funds in this category can also be to train educators in ways of adapting inclusive arts into classroom curriculum for students with disabilities.
Festivals A school or facility organizes a large-scale arts event that typically includes several professional artists conducting multiple arts projects and performances in an inclusive festival format.
