The Power of an Image: Digital Photography Workshop for Veterans


This workshop will focus on what makes a photograph good, and how to create great pictures. The workshop will cover fundamental aesthetics as well as how to pre-visualize andNothing on TV lr conceptualize images. We will also review tools, equipment and techniques. We will discuss how traditional photography has influenced digital photography and why altering digital images is important. We will review and critique images together as a group. As a final project, we will exhibit images produced by the class.


Born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden, Benny van der Wal moved to the United States in 1997. He earned his BFA in photography from the University of Utah and has since worked as a commercial photographer and graphic designer for top creative agencies, international websites and magazines. In 2011, Benny graduated Summa Cum Laude from the MFA photography program at Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara, California. His personal work has received international recognition by the Art of Photography Show, the Oceanside Museum of Art, and the Adobe Design Achievement Awards. Benny has exhibited in premier Utah venues including the Kimball Art Center, Art Access, Eccles Community Art Center, Bountiful/Davis Art Center, Rio Gallery, Springville Museum of Art and the Natural History Museum.

About the Veterans Workshops:

Program founded in 2012 

Art Access partners with the George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center to host a series of art workshops for veterans. Workshops are open to all veterans of the U.S. Military. Most workshop sessions are limited to 12 participants. This program offers various workshops in creative writing and visual arts throughout the year.
