Introduction to Poetry Writing for Veterans

This series of poetry writing workshops will be facilitated by Jon Sebba, a veteran who used his poetry to process his experiences in combat. In this workshop participants will look at examples of poetry and prose to understand the basic ingredients of a poem. He will teach the different devices available for expression such as style, tone, form, metaphor, rhyme and sound. Participants will discuss the meaning of poetry and explore why we write creatively. Prompts will be offered to stimulate participants to write their own poems or prose. All skill levels are welcome.

WORKSHOP DATES: This 4-week class meets Fridays, September 22, September 29, October 6, and October 13

TIME: 10AM - 1PM

COST: $10 (includes supplies)

About The Teaching Artist

Jon Sebba was born in South Africa. After high school he immigrated to Israel, joined the Army and fought in the Arab-Israeli Six Day War (1967). Shortly after that he came to the US to study, became an engineer and a citizen. He worked in several western states, and is now retired, spending summers in Utah and winters in Arizona. A volume of his poems, written in response to his experiences in combat, was awarded first prize by the Utah State Poetry Society in 2013. He volunteers with the VA and also at a prison, where he helps people to write better poetry and prose. He wants to share that writing is good medicine.
